Pongal... Les Tamouls d'Inde du Sud et Sri Lanka ont plusieurs fêtes dans l’année. La plus importante, la plus joyeuse, Pongal, dure plusieurs jours à la mi-janvier.
On remercie le soleil pour les récoltes en faisant cuire du riz nouveau dans un récipient neuf jusqu’à ce qu'il déborde, tout gluant.
Au moment du débordement, symbole d'abondance et de prospérité, les Tamouls s’écrient avec joie: “Pongalô Pongal ! Pongalô Pongal !”.
Après la cérémonie rituelle d’offrande au soleil, le riz gluant cuit dans du lait est distribué à tous. Konm bon!
Les aléas d'une l'histoire oblitérante ont fait que Pongal n'est plus qu'un souvenir à restaurer en Guadeloupe et Martinique. Mais l'expression "pati an pongol" est passée dans la langue...
The pongal pot contains the first rice harvest of the year. It comes to a boil and auspiciously begins to overflow the pot, portending a bountiful year. Also Chakkarapongal(sweet pongal) and vadas (vadè) are prepared.
Pongal is celebrated throughout Tamilnadu. Other parts of India celebrate Pongal in the name of Makara Sankranthi. Pongal is also called as 'tamilar thirunal' meaning holy day for tamils.
The sun god Surya Narayana is worshipped on the day. People thank the sun god for the good harvest and wealth he had given the previous year. It is only because of sun, the rice crop flourishes. Rice is the staple food of Tamil people. So it is a thanksgiving ceremony.
People celebrate Pongal by wearing new clothes. They offer sugarcane, vegetables etc., to the sun god. Pongal one of the favorite foods of the tamilians is prepared on pongal day.
